General Assembly Report
This past week, our General Assembly kicked off the process of building our collective platform. We had a focused, thoughtful, and productive first session—one that set a strong foundation for the work ahead. The energy and engagement in the room were clear signs that we are building something powerful together!
We’ve officially begun the amendment process for our platform, and proposed changes will be listed and circulated soon. As we prepare for our next General Assembly meeting on Saturday, April 6th at 4:00 PM, we encourage all members to continue discussing the platform within their organizations. This is a critical part of the democratic process—making sure each amendment reflects the values and priorities of our base.
Accepted Amendments:
Inclusion of non-institutional community members as stakeholders
Include graduate workers, student hourly workers, and staff
Establishment of a community learning initiative committee
Pending Amendments:
Specification of types of student workers
expansion of collective bargaining
Add demand: develop a union or collective bargaining organization that represents or provides a coalitional framework for connecting and representing all academic workers at iu (university and/or campus-level)
The remaining submitted amendments still require some language suggestions, but these will be submitted through the week!
Important Deadline:
To have amendments considered at the April 6 meeting, they must be submitted no later than Thursday, April 4th at 7:00 PM. Don’t forget: take the platform back to your orgs, workshop it together, and send your edits in.
Planning Committee:
We’re also excited to announce the creation of a "Higher-ed Day of Action" Committee, which will begin planning mobilization efforts for our events and actions on Wednesday, April 17th. If you’re interested in organizing, logistics, outreach, or just want to support the work—we want you on the committee!
The Process Going Forward:
This week
Discuss with your organizations about ways to change the university (remember: an organization can be three like-minded people in a group chat!)
Submit a complete amendment with the section you’d like to alter or add, as well as the specific language you want to replace it with.
Show Up for the next meeting to be ready to finalize the platform and put our plan into action
Let’s keep the momentum going and make our next meeting even more impactful.
